The three tests evaluate the applicant’s English language skills. The three tests focus on the four components of the English language, reading, writing, speaking and listening.

Reading: The reading section in IELTS lasts for 60 minutes, in TOEFL lasts from 60 to 80 minutes, and in PTE it lasts from 32 to 41 minutes. In PTE, reading is an integrated skill test. In IELTS and TOEFL, it is only objective-type questions.

Listening: In these three tests, candidates must listen to voice recordings and answer questions accordingly. The listening test lasts for 30 minutes in IELTS, but it is longer in PTE and TOEFL.

Speaking: In IELTS, the speaking test is conducted in direct session with the examiner. In TOEFL and PTE, the candidates record their answers using a microphone. PTE combines the speaking test and the writing test as a single section.

In TOEFL, summarizing of a reading passage, a recording, and an essay on a given topic must be done. In PTE, summarizing of a given passage and an essay on the given topic must be done.

TOEFL tests are accepted in the US and Canada. It is the longest exam conducted for four hours and is a computer-based test. PTE is an automated test that is completed in a single day.
